Societe Generale Design

A website to showcase the design team and their work. To challenge the stereotype that design in banking is not “exciting” and attract future talent to the team.

Project overview

Whilst the Design Team at Societe Generale had come a long way since establishing nearly a decade ago, its public design page had remained the same. It was now outdated and unrelatable.
The challenge: to design a website for the Société Générale Design Team to promote SG’s public presence on design-related topics, provide up-to-date information internally and externally and attract top candidates to join our team.

My role:

Lead UX Designer.

Involved in researching, facilitating, designing and delivering. Working with a PO, stakeholders, users and developers.

The impact:

Delivered a well-crafted, informative, and creative site that reflected the voice of our design team, promoted our work and collaboration, and would attract future talent to the team.

Discover and Define

I started by reviewing all the existing pages under the Approach, Works and Join us. I analysed research conducted in the form of surveys and questionnaires that focused on discovering what problems there were with the current website.

The out-of-date designs poorly communicated our approach and methodologies, and failed to attract interest from potential new designers.

Personaes

I developed two personaes:

Personae 1 (primary):

An external UX candidate. They are interested in SG job offers, preparing for an interview, or finding trending design content.

Focusing the scope

To focus on our primary personae, it was clear I needed to start by re-designing the Join Us page.

Personae 2 (secondary):

An internal SG staff member. They want to understand our design approach, strategy, and work.

The first challenge was to tackle was the content. It needed a refresh, so I started by interviewing designers on our team to understand who we were and how we wanted to convey ourselves.

I wrote the page content in to 3 distinctive sections:

“I wanted to challenge the stereotype that the finical sector is a ‘sterile’ or ‘boring’ place to work in design. Instead, it can be exciting, innovative and creative.”

1.     Being a Product/UX Designer in our team.

Basically, what you get as a designer if you work with us.

2.     Get to know us.

A proper insight into who we are and what we’re like.

3.     Come work with us.

Who you, what are your skills and if you might fit into our team.

Get to know us

I wanted the Get to know us section to bring to life who we are as a team but also highlight our individuality. I sent a questionnaire to all the designers in the team to answer 8 different questions. These ranged from describing career journeys to design inspiration.

With over 50 responses, there were plenty of interesting and relevant answers to choose from that would give a good, overall picture, of us as designers but also people!

The order of content is based on the results from a survey sent out asking people if, hypothetically, they were applying to a new job, what information is most important to them.

“What is one thing that surprised you working with the SG Design team?”

“What was your career journey to UX?”

Develop

Now I had the content for the page, it was onto the design. I started with low-fidelity wireframe concepts.
